Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital

Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital

Partners HealthCare; Charlestown Navy Yard - Boston, MA

2006 - 2013

Project Description :  Situated along Boston Harbor in historic Charlestown Navy Yard, Spaulding’s new facility is clad in profiled metal panel and glass to provide an uplifting architectural expression, and to recall the site’s unique history as a major ship-building center for the United States Navy from the 1800’s through the early 1970’s.  Sun shades are integrated at larger glass expanses and a series of metal bands wrap the primary architectural volumes into a single, unified element. The masonry base anchors the building to the surrounding site and also reflects the brick tradition of Charlestown Navy Yard.

A three-story podium houses many of the hospital’s common patient, public and operational functions including; lobby, conference center, cafe, therapy pool and gymnasiums.  Administrative offices, outpatient programs and research space are also located in the podium.  Landscaped roof terraces and green roofs provide both visual and physical access to the outdoors for patients and staff.  The five-story tower is set back from the harbor and houses 132 all-private patient rooms with various specialties including spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury and pediatrics.
